Dr Maggie Brierton

Clinical Psychologist, Psychotherapist & EMDR Therapist

I am a Clinical Psychologist and Psychotherapist with over 20 years of experience helping people navigate emotional distress, life transitions, trauma, loss, and relationship difficulties. Alongside my private practice, I have worked extensively within specialist NHS services, including adult psychotherapy, health psychology, oncology and palliative care, child and family services, and infant mental health.

My approach is grounded in compassion, curiosity, authenticity, and respect. I believe that every person’s story makes sense in the context of their life experiences and relationships. Rather than applying a “one size fits all” model, I work collaboratively to understand what has brought you to this point and what might help you move towards a more fulfilling and meaningful life.

Throughout my career, I have been particularly interested in the ways our early experiences, relationships, losses, and life challenges shape how we understand ourselves and connect with others. I have worked with people experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, chronic health difficulties, and complex emotional challenges, supporting them to develop greater self-understanding, resilience, and psychological flexibility.

My therapeutic practice integrates a range of evidence-based approaches, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Schema Therapy, Mindfulness-based approaches, attachment-informed therapies, and the Cognitive Behavioural Analysis System of Psychotherapy (CBASP) for persistent and chronic depression. This breadth of training allows me to tailor therapy to each person’s individual needs, goals, and circumstances.

Alongside professional training and clinical experience, my work is informed by a longstanding interest in mindfulness, compassion, relationships, and personal growth. I am interested not only in symptom reduction but in helping people reconnect with themselves, deepen self-understanding, and cultivate lives that feel more aligned with their values.

I work with adults experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, bereavement and loss, relationship difficulties, life transitions, low self-esteem, and the lasting impact of adverse or challenging life experiences. Whether you are seeking support during a period of crisis or are interested in deeper personal growth and self-understanding, I offer a warm, thoughtful, and collaborative therapeutic space.

At the heart of my work is the belief that meaningful change becomes possible when we can approach our experiences with curiosity, compassion, and courage.

I hold a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the University of Edinburgh and am registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and a member of Eye Movement Desensitisation UK (EMDR-UK).
